Next.js App with OpenAI, Cursor, and Supabase Auth 🔐

👋 Introduction: Why This Matters 🤔

Building web apps with secure logins can be a pain. This guide will show you how to use the power of AI (OpenAI’s o1 model), a smart code editor (Cursor), and a Firebase alternative (Supabase) to build a Next.js app with authentication without writing a single line of code.🤯

🤖 Setting the Stage: Tools and Prerequisites 🧰

Before we begin, make sure you have the following:

  • Cursor AI Editor: Download the paid version for access to Cursor Composer (https://www.cursor.com/).
  • Node.js and npm (or pnpm): Ensure you have these installed on your system.
  • Supabase Account: Create a free account (https://supabase.com/).

🔑 Supabase Setup: Your Project’s Key 🗝️

  1. Create a New Project: Head over to your Supabase dashboard and create a new project.
  2. Grab Your Keys: Navigate to Project Settings -> API. Copy your Project URL, Anon Public Key, and Service Role Key. You’ll need these later.

🚀 Building Our App: Let the AI Do the Work! ✨

1. Project Setup: A Next.js Foundation 🏗️

  1. Open Cursor: Create a new project.
  2. Install ShadCN: In a Cursor terminal, run npx shadcn@latest and follow the prompts. Shadcn will give us some nice pre-built UI components.

2. Designing with v0: Crafting a Beautiful UI 🎨

  1. Switch to v0: In Cursor, navigate to the v0 tab.
  2. Generate Your Website: Use a prompt like this:
   Generate me a beautiful, professional, modern website for my AI automation marketing agency. I want a dark, sleek, and professional look with a login button in the top right header.
  1. Refine and Import: Use v0 to refine the design. Once happy, copy the generated code and paste it into your Cursor project.

3. AI-Powered Coding with o1: Authentication Made Easy 🔐

  1. Back to Cursor: Switch back to the Cursor tab.
  2. Add Your Superbase Docs: Create a new Markdown file (e.g., superbase-auth.md) and paste the contents of the Supabase Next.js Auth documentation (https://supabase.com/docs/guides/auth/server-side/nextjs?queryGroups=router&router=app). You can reference this file in your prompts.
  3. Let o1 Work Its Magic: Use prompts like these, referencing your superbase-auth.md file:
   Using the Superbase auth guide, set up authentication for me in this Next.js app. When the login button is clicked, it should take the user to a login page.
   Generate me a beautiful, professional login page that matches the theme of my site.
   Connect the login and signup functionality to Superbase.
  1. Iterate and Fix: o1 might need some guidance. If you encounter errors, copy and paste them into Cursor, and o1 will help you resolve them.

4. Putting It All Together: The Finishing Touches

  1. Environment Variables: In your Cursor project, create a .env.local file and add your Superbase credentials:
   NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL=your_supabase_url
   NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY=your_supabase_anon_key
  1. Run Your App: Start your development server (e.g., npm run dev).

🎉 You Did It! 🎉

You’ve successfully built a Next.js app with secure Supabase authentication, all with the help of AI.
