🧠 Hack the North’s AI Chatbot: A Blueprint for Building Your Own🤖

🚀 Identifying the Problem:

😩 The Struggle is Real: Participants skipping the handbook and overwhelming organizers with repeat questions.

Example: Imagine a sea of eager hackers at Hack the North, the largest hackathon in Canada 🇨🇦. They’re bombarded with information, but most don’t read the lengthy handbook. Result? Organizers drown in a wave of the same questions, like “What’s the Wi-Fi password?” 🤯

💡 AI to the Rescue: A chatbot that automatically answers FAQs, freeing up organizers.

How it works: Using Retrieval Augmented Generation, the chatbot taps into existing content (handbooks, FAQs) to provide instant answers.

🗺️ Designing the Solution:

🎯 Crystal Clear Vision:

  • What it does: Answers participant questions about the event.
  • Where it lives: Within the event’s Slack channel for easy access.
  • Data it uses: Existing handbooks, FAQs, maps, schedules, plus real-time announcements.
  • How it answers: One-shot answers for simplicity and abuse prevention.
  • Success metrics: Satisfaction (reactions), accuracy (manual and automatic scoring), speed, cost.

🚀 Voiceflow: The Chosen One:

We chose Voiceflow for its collaborative features, visual interface, and ability to handle complex agents. It’s perfect for teams and scales as your project grows!

⚙️ Making a Plan:

📝 Product Requirements Document (PRD):

  • Outline the vision, reasoning, and nitty-gritty details of the solution.
  • Prioritize features using a crawl-walk-run approach (start simple, then get fancy).
  • Ensure everyone’s on the same page, especially with AI being so new.

🛠️ Technical Plan:

  • Translate the PRD into a tangible roadmap.
  • Decide on deployment, hosting, integrations (like Slack’s messaging permissions in our case).
  • Create diagrams to visualize the flow of information.

🤝 Presenting to Stakeholders:

  • Show, don’t just tell! Use Voiceflow’s prototyping tool for a hands-on demo.
  • Be ready to address concerns about AI, such as hallucinations and data privacy.
  • Negotiate and adjust based on feedback.

⏳ Setting Timelines:

  • Factor in development time, team experience, and project complexity.
  • Break down the project into phases (crawl, walk, run) with separate timelines.

🎉 Conclusion:

Evaluation and planning are crucial for AI project success. By following these steps, you can set yourself up for a smooth development process and create a truly impactful solution! Remember, it’s better to start simple and iterate than to get bogged down in complexity. Happy building! 🏗️
